Dreamers of the Industrial Age
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the opening of the City Museum in Gdańsk, a new exhibition was presented in the Zielona Brama building. Referring to the 19th-century exhibitions that were often presented in this historic place, Dorota Terlecka and Natalia Fierka from Biuro Kreacja tried to recreate the atmosphere and climate of those times.
While visiting the exhibition, visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the past, feeling the atmosphere in which the artists of that time created. The arrangement of the space was a challenge – the largest room in the Zielona Brama building does not have traditional exhibition walls. Despite the difficulties, it was possible to create an exhibition that, with the help of the arrangement and references to the architecture of the 19th century, transports viewers to the times of those artists.
Right at the beginning, visitors are greeted by a painting with a dog and golden lettering presenting the title of the exhibition. The choice of the symbolism of the dog is to emphasize the romantic and dreamy attitude of the painters of that time to reality, who tried to cut themselves off from the sudden changes brought by industrialization and new technical discoveries.
An exhibition full of saturated colors
The exhibition arrangement is full of saturated colors. Dark green contrasts with gold frames and creates an ideal background for the exhibition. Different shades of brown divide the space into two parts, where paintings related to architecture and applied art, such as sculptures, embroidery, ceramics or orientalism, are presented.
